2026 Week 42 | Power BI: Overlay Information With Bookmarks

Introduction

Bookmarks in Power BI can be so tricky sometimes but they’re so satisfying when everything lines up the way you want it to.

This weeks challenge by Vivien Lee looks simple at first, it’s only one chart, one table, and a few buttons. But click on the info button in the corner and the page turns into instructions that guide the user on how the dashboard works.

This is a small use-case but the same thing can be applied to bigger and more complex reports where a user might not immediately know what a chart is showing, or what a filter does, or even where to start.

Requirements

Table:

  1. Create a measure for the Fastest Lap per Race.
  2. Create the table and use the measure you just made to highlight the fastest lap for each race.
  3. Add a slicer for Race.

Bump Charts:

  1. Create two bump charts using Team Standings and Driver Standings.
  2. Line them up so they overlap.
  3. Create two bookmarks – one shows the Team Standings chart and hides the Driver Standings chart and the other bookmark does the inverse. Make sure you turn on selected visuals and select the correct layers when you create or update each bookmark.
  4. For the design, I used 3 pill shapes. One longer grey one, and two smaller red ones that go under each bookmark and show/hide depending on which bookmark is selected.

Information Button:

  1. Insert two information buttons.
  2. Create the instructions view using arrows and text to explain the slicer, bookmarks, and table. You can also overlay the whole page with a shape to grey everything out and put it behind the slicer/bookmarks to highlight them.
  3. Create two bookmarks “Info button on” where everything you just created is shown, and “Info button off” where this is all hidden.
  4. Set the actions for the two info buttons.

Bonus Challenge:

The bonus challenge is to create the toggle to switch from the Overall view to the Focused view. This involves more bookmarks!
