Introduction
This month, we’re teaming up with the Microsoft Fabric Community to bring you a series of bite-sized, hands-on challenges designed to help you build (and share!) your skills one week at a time. Whether you’re just getting started or looking for a quick midweek spark, Miniviz May is all about learning by doing. Jump in, try something new, and see what you create alongside the community!
We’re kicking things off with one of the most important (and often misunderstood) business metrics: headcount. But this week, it’s not about the number, it’s about the story behind it.
What changed? Why did it change? And how do you make that movement clear to someone at a glance?
Your challenge: build a waterfall chart that walks us through how headcount moved from January 1 to March 31.
Show the story, keep it clean. Let’s see what you build! When you’re done, upload your .pbix file to the QuickvViz Gallery to enter to win prizes!
Dataset
You can use Microsoft’s starter file for this week’s data, or, you can come up with your own! Remember, keep the data simple and use something that will be helpful to you as you learn!
Requirements
- Use the data from the starter file or bring in your own. Note that your data doesn’t have to be about headcount – it can be about anything you’d like to look into and see what changed.
- Create a waterfall chart. Use the inbuilt waterfall core visual, or, create your own using custom visuals!
- Ensure your visual is accessible. Set tab order, alt text, and ensure proper color contrast.
- Submit your waterfall chart to the QuickViz gallery in the Fabric Community. You will need to join the community if you’re not already a member. It’s free and easy!
Share
After you finish your workout, share on BlueSky or LinkedIn using the hashtags #WOW2026, #MinivizMay, and #PowerBI, and tag @MMarie, @shan_gsd, @KerryKolosko (on BlueSky).
