2022 Week 05 | Power BI: Can you make a Nested Chart with Charticulator?

Introduction

This week we are familiarising ourselves with Charticulator and Nested Charts.

This graph was inspired by Gus Wezerek and Sara Chodosh’s chart for NYT Opinion.

Requirements

  1. Download the data and remove all columns excepting the Date field, New Cases Smoothed Field and Location (save as csv)
  2. Create a second csv with only Location = High Income data. Ensure the dates are American format (YYYY-MM-DD)
  3. Launch Charticulator in your browser and load the High Income data
  4. Add a rectangle mark to the glyph area, ensure it snaps to grid
  5. Link the fill colour of the rectangle mark to “New Cases Smoothed” data
  6.  (Optional) To create an area chart, link the rectangle marks using bands and set the width of the rectangle to 0.5.
  7. Link the height of the rectangle mark to “New Cases Smoothed” data
  8. Link the X-Axis of the plot segment (not the glyph) to the Date field
  9. Link the Title Text to the Location Field
  10. Export the visual as a Charticulator TEMPLATE

CREATE NEW CHART

  1. Create New Chart with the same csv data
  2. On the Plot Segment, Group By Location
  3. Drag the Nested Chart option into the Glyph Area
  4. In the Nested Chart options select Import Template
  5. Import the Charticulator Template from the previous step 9
  6. Size the Nested Chart to 200 by 400 and adjust the Chart Area to fit (or leave blank for auto-sized charts)
  7. Export as Power BI Custom Visual

OPEN POWER BI DESKTOP

  1. Create a new Power BI Desktop file
  2. Import the csv from step one
  3. Filter the data to only the income locations, remove unnecessary columns
  4. Import Power BI Custom Visual into Power BI Desktop
  5. Drag the fields into the Custom Visual

  1. Create a spiral plot
