2019 Week 46: Can you build a dynamic scatter plot with proportional brushing?

This is a special week for Workout Wednesday, as we are running this challenge live from Tableau Conference in Las Vegas! We’ve put together a challenge this week that is simple enough for someone who is just getting started with Tableau, tricky enough for those further along in their Tableau journey, and a great teaching opportunity for those who are more advanced! As you’ve probably come to expect form my challenges, I love interactivity with parameters and actions. The challenge this week is focused on building something that simply lets users explore their data in a semi-self serve way. Sometimes there doesn’t have to be a story for a data product to be successful, as simply getting people to think about data in a new or slightly different way can be a big win. Try out this week’s challenge to help develop your: aggregation mastery, parameter knowledge, and set action development… have fun!

Superstore data provided in Tableau 2019.1 Requirements
  • Dashboard size 1000 x 700
  • Build a dynamic scatter plot
  • Level of detail should be either: Product, Manufacturer, or Customer
  • X and Y axes should be either sum of: Quantity, Sales, Profit, or Discount
  • X axis should be on top of the scatter plot
  • Provide percent of total bar charts when mark selections are made
  • Match tooltips
  • Match formatting as closely as possible

    In the original solution on the “Product” level, the number of total orders in the bar chart tooltip changes after selecting items on the scatter chart.
    It seems that the number of selected points is added to the total calc.
    Do you know why is that?

    Do you know why is that?
