2021 Week 3 | Power BI: Report Interactivity

Introduction

Thanks to everyone who participated in Week 2 of #WorkoutWednesday – Power BI edition. If you are joining this week, you may want to revisit the first couple challenges as this week will build on the data model that we created in W01 and the basic KPI report that we built in W02. This week we are going to be adding a slicer and interactivity to our basic KPI report.

Requirements

  • Add a slicer for [Year] to the report.
  • Edit Interactions for the slicer to have it only slice the KPIs and bar charts (not trends)
  • Edit Interactions of the Conference breakdowns so that they filter the KPIs and Trends on click.
  • Use colors to differentiate between metrics
  • Figure out how much money the MAC conference made in 2016

Dataset

This week uses a data set that breaks down NCAA athletic department expenses and revenues by year. You can get it here at data.world. This is the same data set that was used in W01.

  1. -8,301,998.5 for me, might be related to the variation on data published, mentioned on previous weeks, or I might be an error ? 🙁

  2. Hey, excellent series. As a complete newbie to Power BI, seeing how I should have solved it is so awesome. I am participating, but don’t twitter so no tags (apologies).

  3. I’m loving this – I did the first two weeks on time, and am playing catch up right now.
But tell me, is there a way I can format the negatives on the area chart to show in a different color than the positives as easily as I can with the bar chart?

  4. You choose the ‘Area Chart’ type instead of the ‘Line Chart’. (in the ‘Vizualizations’ menubar on the right)

  5. It’s visual type, you can change the visual from ‘Line chart’ to ‘Area chart’ for trend charts
